The Scene on the Street

Device Team went on a quest to find South Africa’s perfect Quart & thanks to the expertise of Street Scene‘s culture-blending Township/Shebeen tour, I can gladly report that we found it, alongside many other treasures, deep in the heart of Kwa-mashu. A few pics from the day are below, but this is something every South African should experience first hand. N.B. Dont drink and walk on the road & watch out for Buffalo! Good times…

The City Is Mine

Rooftop + Party. Two words that go together like sunglasses & Stevie Wonder. Add some verbs like squeak, sing, dance, jol, drink & high five… some nouns like takkies, jeans, camera… & maybe a few pronouns like Gangs Of Ballet, The La Els, Seake, Lee & Sony Ericsson. So far, so good. Construct your Saturday night activities around these words, an epic photography competition showcasing awe-inspiring shots, homegrown musical talent & things start to look championship.

The City Is Mine series kicks off in Durban this Saturday (3rd) & if you haven’t been able to get invited yet, then you’d better hustle hard… the remaining tickets are wrapped up in a few mythical Wonka Bars in the 031 area. Alternatively, you could beg the lovely Lady Lee Rider for some. This one should redefine rambunctious.

The BLK Unit

Not that you didn’t already know this, but we adore the BLK JKS. Unnaturally freaky “going-through-their-trash-can-to-see-if-they-got-our-fan-mail” kind of “adore”. Thankfully, the restraining order on us still allows us to watch them perform their mind-melting blend of progressive rock, ska, reggae & experimental sounds in public spaces. Their gig at Unit 11 on Saturday was just such an occasion & what a premiership-worthy ear-stroking head-bopping boot-skiffling performance it turned out to be.

*There were very few good pictures of the actual band playing because I was dancing too much, so there’s some of the interesting Unit 11 graffiti thrown in for good measure. This post is more about YOU finding their music. Why are you still reading this? Go. Now.

Love You Long Street

Cape Town is EPIC. Almost overwhelmingly so. So much natural beauty festooned by a modern cosmopolitan city with a bustling design, social & entertainment scene. Whats not to love? Capetonians do know it too (probably why they choose to live there), which can cause them to look down upon an uncultured 031 Ruffian such as myself. Nevertheless, I braved the awkward hipster glares & spring sunshine for a trip down the infamous Long Street in the heart of the CBD. Too much of awsum!
