The City Is Mine

Rooftop + Party. Two words that go together like sunglasses & Stevie Wonder. Add some verbs like squeak, sing, dance, jol, drink & high five… some nouns like takkies, jeans, camera… & maybe a few pronouns like Gangs Of Ballet, The La Els, Seake, Lee & Sony Ericsson. So far, so good. Construct your Saturday night activities around these words, an epic photography competition showcasing awe-inspiring shots, homegrown musical talent & things start to look championship.

The City Is Mine series kicks off in Durban this Saturday (3rd) & if you haven’t been able to get invited yet, then you’d better hustle hard… the remaining tickets are wrapped up in a few mythical Wonka Bars in the 031 area. Alternatively, you could beg the lovely Lady Lee Rider for some. This one should redefine rambunctious.

A Mighty Collision

Full length albums from the mystical Border Community are like hen’s teeth, dipped in gold, frankincense and myrrh. So when they announced in October that avant-garde singer-songwriter Kate Wax would be releasing her new long player on their enigmatic UK label, we cried tears of violent joy. Fast forward a few weeks & we’d have to say, the hair-pullingly-excruciating wait was worth it. It’s a wondrous mix of fragile poems & punchy verses interwoven into that trademark Border Community not-quite-shoe-gazing IDM sound that you can never quite put your finger on. Beautifully weird wintry atmospheres give way to bouncing rhythms, sucking you into a void of Kate’s darker dreams before spitting you out with a Bjork / XX / Fever Ray / Planningtorock hangover.

The BLK Unit

Not that you didn’t already know this, but we adore the BLK JKS. Unnaturally freaky “going-through-their-trash-can-to-see-if-they-got-our-fan-mail” kind of “adore”. Thankfully, the restraining order on us still allows us to watch them perform their mind-melting blend of progressive rock, ska, reggae & experimental sounds in public spaces. Their gig at Unit 11 on Saturday was just such an occasion & what a premiership-worthy ear-stroking head-bopping boot-skiffling performance it turned out to be.

*There were very few good pictures of the actual band playing because I was dancing too much, so there’s some of the interesting Unit 11 graffiti thrown in for good measure. This post is more about YOU finding their music. Why are you still reading this? Go. Now.
